Lawson Cup

Nenagh AFC 1-2 Ballynanty Rovers

Nenagh AFC went out of the Lawson Cup on Thursday evening when they lost 2-1 to Ballynanty Rovers in the quarter final in Brickfields.

It proved a hard-fought game that could have gone either way but, in the end, fell in favour of the visitors.

Balla took the lead after five minutes through Josh Adams.

Nenagh lost a player to a red card just on half time and Balla doubled their advantage on 58 minutes when Kane Connolly scored.

Nenagh pulled one back through Pa Steed a couple of minutes later and had the league challengers on the ropes late on but were unable to breach a solid backline.

Lower Leagues

In the Division 2A Lipper Cup Lough Derg caused a big upset when they defeated runaway league champions Hyde Rangers 2-1 to reach the semi-finals.

Producing their best performance of the season Derg started with intensity and belief and never let their visitors settle.

After having a goal ruled out for offside, Derg deservedly went ahead before half time when Lyons and O’Donoghue combined to set up Cian McAuley, who finished well.

Hyde responded after the restart with an equaliser to set up a thrilling finish.

With penalties looming, Hickey’s long throw was flicked on by O’Donoghue and headed home by McAuley on 82 minutes for his second of the night.

Lough Derg had to withstand a late onslaught but did so in style to advance.

In the Open Cup on Sunday, Lough Derg crashed out 4-1 to Abbey Rovers. Sean Lyons scored for Derg.

Newport Under 17’s were beaten after a penalty shoot-out in the Divisional Cup final.

The sides finished 1-1. R Gaffery was on the mark for Newport.
