Funding for Tipp fire stations
A major investment of €5 million has been approved for two fire stations in North Tipperary.
While concrns were raised last week over the future of Newport Fire Station, the Government this week approved €3 million for a new headquarters in Borrisokane and a€2 million upgrade of the station in Roscrea.
Fianna Fáil TD for North Tipperary and Northwest Kilkenny, Deputy Ryan O’Meara welcomed the announcement for both towns. “I am delighted that €3 million has been approved by Government today for a brand-new fire station headquarters in Borrisokane,” Deputy O’Meara said on Tuesday.
“This is a project I have been following and working on for some time. Tipperary County Council acquired the site adjacent to the current station in Borrisokane for works and have been awaiting funding. This funding is now in place!”
Local councillor JP O’Meara also commented on the announcement, highlighting the positive impact for the fire service team and the wider community.
“This is great news for everybody in the Borrisokane area, but especially for all the hard‑working staff in the station,” Cllr O’Meara said. “I welcome this news that Minister James Browne has signed off on this project.”
The investment will allow Tipperary County Council to proceed with the development of the new station in Borrisokane, ensuring enhanced emergency response in the region. It is part of the €328.5 million Fire Services Capital Programme that Minister Browne has announced today. As part of this, it has been confirmed that Nenagh will be receiving upgraded Compartment Fire Behaviour training facilities.
Meanwhile, Deputy O’Meara welcomed the signing-off by Cabinet of €2 million for a major upgrade of the fire station headquarters in Roscrea town.
“In late February, I welcomed Minister Browne to Roscrea, and he visited a number of housing developments. I am very grateful to the minister for all of his work and for backing Roscrea today.”
In conclusion, Deputy O’Meara noted his support for Tipperary County Council’s campaign to recruit new firefighters for Newport Fire Station.
“I support the campaign that Tipperary County Council is currently running to recruit new firefighters for Newport Fire Station. It is a priority for me, as a local representative that Newport retains its fire station. I will continue to support Tipperary County Council as they ramp up their campaign to save Newport Fire Station.”
