Easter 1916 commemoration in Nenagh
North Tipperary Sinn Féin will hold its annual Easter 1916 commemorations on Easter Sunday in Thurles and Nenagh.
In both Thurles and Nenagh, the 1916 Proclamation of Independence will be read out and wreaths will be laid in memory of those who gave their lives for Irish independence on Easter week 1916 and throughout the struggle for Irish Independence.
The Thurles Commemoration will assemble at 11:45am for a 12pm start at the Stoneman statue in Liberty Square, Thurles. The event will be chaired by Cathaoirleach of North Tipperary Sinn Féin, Dan Harty and the main oration will be delivered by former Sinn Féin TD for Tipperary, Martin Browne.
The Commemoration in Nenagh will assemble at the Republican monument, Banba Square, at 2:30pm, with a 3pm start. Cathaoirleach of Nenagh Sinn Féin, Damien O’Donoghue will chair the event and the Sinn Féin TD for Clare, Donna McGettigan will deliver the main oration.
All are welcome to both events.
Cathaoirleach of North Tipperary Sinn Féin, Dan Harty said, “Easter 2026 is particularly significant as it falls on the centenary of the use of the Easter Lily emblem. The Easter Lily is worn by Irish Republicans to mark the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and to pay tribute to all those who died for Irish freedom in every phase of the struggle.
Mr. Harty continued, “In 1926 it was the women of Cumann na mBan who created and popularised what was to become the enduring symbol of Irish Republicanism. It is fitting that we remember the contribution of Irish women and Cumann na mBan to the fight for Irish freedom this year. Cumann na mBan was very active in Tipperary during the revolutionary period with many members and branches located across the county.”
Mr Harty concluded, “Easter Lilys are available across Tipperary this Easter period and I want to thank everyone for their continued support for our Easter Lily campaign and to extend a welcome to our Thurles and Nenagh Commemorations this weekend.”
