It was a disappointing end to the league phase of the All-Ireland Minor ‘A’ Camogie Championship for Tipperary as they suffered an eight-point defeat at the hands of Galway on Sunday afternoon.
In what was a bit of a dead-rubber with both sides having already secured their place in the semi-finals in two weeks’ time, the outcome has led to the sides facing off again in knockout fare.
While Galway were deserved winners, the eight-point margin was perhaps a bit harsh on Tipp who were more than a match for the home side, particularly in the first half, but the concession of two goals, either side of the break, were the turning point and allowed Galway to turn a one point deficit into a six point lead, and one that lead to a comfortable victory.
The manner in which the visitors conceded the goals will be a major disappointment and a worry for the Tipperary management team as they failed to stop the run through the heart of the defence, a theme which was prevalent throughout the game as the pace of the Galway forwards caused problems for the Tipp rearguard.
The opening score came after 53 seconds when Emma Barrett pointed from close range to put the Tribeswomen ahead.
Tipp were level just over a minute later when Jessie Shanahan, through on goal, blasted over with a goal chance on.
Galway responded with two points in a row, with Leah Forde setting Barrett up for her second before Lauren Morgan added the third in the fourth minute.
A superb finish from a very tight angle from Neasa Dwan had the gap back at one before Abbie Horgan levelled from a dead ball, before she converted another from 65 metres out by the sideline, which went all the way to the back of the net.
The goal seemed to kick Galway into life, and were level by the 20th minute through points from Mary Brigid Cosgrove, Emma Barrett after a superb run and finish, with the leveller coming from the stick of Aoife Scarry.
Alice Butler restored the Tipp lead after being set-up by Jessie Shanahan. The lead was out to two following an Abbie Horgan free. Emma Barrett added another to reduce the arrears, before in the final minute of normal time, Neassa Dwan had the gap back to two.
Straight from the resultant puckout with Galway going short and back to their keeper Leah Horan who launched a long ball forward to Mary Brigid Cosgrove who made a superb catch and made a beeline for the Tipp goal, before batting to the back of the net, to give her side a one-point lead at the break, 1-7 to 1-6.
Within 47 seconds of the restart, the gap was out to five points following a Emma Barrett point, and when the puckout went awry from a Tipperary point-of-view, the ball going straight to Cosgrove who once again headed straight for goal before finishing nicely to the back of the net.
Eva Kenny extended the lead further in the 35th minute before Tipp started to settle in the second half with three points in a row through two Horgan frees and then an excellent point from sub Sarah Jane Ormond.
Another Cosgrove free had the gap to four, before an well-worked team move from Tipp ended with Abbie Horgan pointing from distance.
That would be as good as it got for the visitors as the Connacht side took control in the final fifteen minutes, hitting five scores in a row to put the game beyond doubt.
Clodagh Burke hit the first, before Cosgrove saw her shot saved by Tipp keeper Erin O’Donnell with the rebound falling to Eve Kenny who tapped over. Then it was the turn of Emma Barrett once again to find the target, before Leah Forde added her name to the list of scorers in the 50th minute. Galway added two more points, both from Cosgrove from play and a dead ball.
The away side added a consolation score through an Abbie Horgan 45, with the ref’s whistle ending the game straight after but only for a fortnight when they meet again with an All-Ireland Final spot at stake.
