Lough Derg Greenway ‘parked’

The plan to create a 24km greenway between Ballina and Dromineer has effectively been shelved over difficulty finding a suitable route.

The March meeting of Tipperary Co Council heard that the proposed pedestrian and cycle path along the lake is unlikely to proceed as envisaged. Senior Executive Engineer John Nolan confirmed that the council does not have consultants working on the proposal. There are six greenways being worked on in the county at present; “this one is going to be parked”, Mr Nolan told the meeting.

Cllr Phyll Bugler asked if a greenway could be developed at the Ballina end of the like, where she said there is a great deal of activity between the two bridges with people on electric bikes and great potential for tourism. “It would be a pity to lose it,” she said of the greenway proposal.

Mr Nolan said the Ballina side is the “most challenging”. Building a greenway would involving removing farmyards and driveways, he said.
