Home are the Harty Heroes
By Shane Brophy
Ordinarily, going to school after a Bank Holiday weekend can be a trudge but it wasn’t for the hurlers of St Joseph’s CBS Nenagh who returned to the school to a hero’s welcome on Tuesday after winning the Dr. Harty Cup (Munster Post Primary Schools Under 19 ‘A’ Hurling) last Saturday.
Captain Eoghan Doughan led the 43-man panel and management through a guard of honour provided by the students of both the CBS primary and secondary schools on Summerhill, something they weren’t able to experience immediately after their 2024 success as that coincided with the planned start to the mock exams.
Whether it was planned to start the 2026 mocks on a different date just in case they won the Harty, it is straight ‘A’s all round as Nenagh CBS became just the third Tipperary school to win the Harty Cup on more than one occasion, with the famed trophy staying in the premier county for an unprecedented fourth year in a row.
While ‘the Harty’ is the Everest for Munster schools, Nenagh’s campaign isn’t over as they look to win the Munster and All-Ireland titles in the same year for the first time, and once the celebrations are complete this week, they’ll refocus quickly for an All-Ireland semi-final later this month where they will play the winners of the quarter final between the Leinster champions (St Kieran’s College or Kilkenny CBS who meet this Saturday at Nowlan Park) and the runners-up of the Connacht final (St Raphael’s College, Loughrea v Presentation College, Athenry on Sunday in Ballinasloe).
