A community celebration planned for Portumna

10k run planned for March 15

Portumna is set to host its second 10km run on March 15, marking a vibrant and exciting event for the town and surrounding community. The scenic route promises to be one of the most picturesque in the region, offering participants a chance to experience the stunning natural beauty of Portumna, its landmarks, and the surrounding landscapes.

In addition to the main event, a 1km kiddies’ race will add a fun and family-friendly element to the day. The younger participants can take part in this event, with the option for a parent to join them if needed. The children’s race is sure to be a highlight, bringing energy and excitement to the whole family.

This event is a dream realised for Portumna’s local running group, three long standing members Mark Conroy, Martin Glynn and Mark Visser came up with the idea to have this event and together with The Chamber of Commerce and other members of the running group many of whom have been training together for years. The group, made up of individuals from all walks of life, regularly meets for weekend long runs, interval training, and hill repeats. Some of the group members are training for races all around Ireland and internationally, while others are simply working on improving their personal running goals.

The camaraderie within the group is palpable, with members inspiring each other to achieve what they once thought impossible. The bond that running creates has been especially valuable for individuals training for bigger races. While training can sometimes feel lonely, having a supportive group to share the miles with makes the process not only more enjoyable but more attainable. The group stays connected through a chat group, where they can ask questions, share advice, and make plans for group runs.

The idea to host the 10km run on St Patrick’s Weekend came as a natural fit. With the town’s already vibrant celebrations, including the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade, it offers a chance to bring even more buzz and energy to the area. The run will be a fantastic way to bring the community together, encourage participation in a healthy and positive activity, and celebrate the spirit of the season.

Proceeds from the event will go directly back into the community, benefiting The Chamber of Commerce and local projects. The money raised will support the St Patrick’s Day Parade, Fairies and Scaries, a popular Halloween event in Portumna Forest Park, and the local Community Schools Musical - a wonderful display of local talent and collaboration. The students from the community schools will also play a part in the race by volunteering as marshals, which will foster a sense of ownership and pride in this event.

The Portumna 10km Run is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of the community, of personal achievements, and of coming together for a shared cause. The event is expected to inspire participants of all ages and abilities, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to show the power of teamwork, perseverance, and community spirit.

So, whether you’re a seasoned runner or looking to take part in your very first race, March 15 is a date to remember. Mark your calendars, lace up your running shoes, and get ready to experience the beauty of Portumna like never before!
