Premier League

In the only LDL Premier Division game of the weekend, Nenagh AFC’s relegation rivals Corbally United fell to a 4-0 home defeat to Mungret Regional.

Premier ‘A’ League

Newport Town relinquished their lead at the top of the Premier ‘A’ League table when they fell to a surprise 4-2 defeat at neighbours Aisling Annacotty ‘B’ on Sunday.

Stuck in a dogfight with Star Rovers, Kilmallock and Moyross United as they bid for an immediate return to the top-flight, Newport were expected to consolidate their two point lead against a mid-table Aisling. However, a late collapse saw the home side run in three goals in the final ten minutes to win the spoils.

The home side gave warning early on of the danger they posed up front when Sean Ezekannagha teed up A Iaquaniello to open the scoring after four minutes.

Newport were back on level terms five minutes later when Peter O Sullivan scored.

Just after the break things looked to be going to script when Brian O’Sullivan created an opening for Luke Ryan to put the visitors ahead.

The home side, staring defeat, cleared their bench and the changes had the desired effect. With ten minutes remaining, Ezekannagha equalised and with a minute to play he put Aisling ahead.

With time virtually up, Kelvin Amadsun made sure of the points with the final goal for Aisling.

Newport Town: Keith Mawdsley, Eoin Looney, Pa Murtagh, Elliott Slattery, David O'Brien, Aaron Coleman, Luke Ryan, Peter O'Sullivan, Brian O'Sullivan, Conor Brett, Callum O'Connell. Subs: Sean Bonfield, Ciaran Carey, Killian O'Malley.

Results elsewhere saw Star Rovers edge out Carew Park to go a point clear at the top.

Kilmallock join Newport in second spot following an impressive 6-0 win over Moyross.

Lower League

Newport Town ‘B’ put up a superb challenge before going down by the odd goal in three when they hosted Ballynanty Rovers ‘B’ in Division 1B on Sunday.

Balla are current league leaders and also sitting pretty in the Munster Shield. They were expected to take the spoils but when James Kirk set up Darren Collins to fire Newport ahead midway through the opening half, the game took on a different vibe.

It took the leaders two minutes to respond when Darragh McNamara equalised.

Jamie O’Sullivan put Balla in front after the break but the visitors had to withstand serious home pressure before the final whistle.
