Annals of Arra celebrates its seventh volume

The Arra Historical and Archaeological Society will mark a major milestone with the launch of the seventh volume of its much-loved journal, The Annals of Arra on Thursday evening, December 4, in Reidy’s of Newtown at 8.30pm.

Reflecting on the journey of the publication, Arra Historical and Archaeological Society Chairperson, Dr Siobhán Geraghty, remarked: “The Annals of Arra has taken on a much bigger life than any of us who initiated the publication ever envisaged. It is almost hard to believe that we are now launching the seventh volume of this wonderful journal.”

This volume of the Annals of Arra will be officially launched by Fr Lorcan Kenny, who is a priest in the local Odhrán Pastoral Area and also a published author.

While the journal’s focus remains firmly on the half Barony of Arra, its reach extends far beyond local boundaries. Contributions come not only from those living in the area but also from individuals abroad, who continue to cherish their connection to Arra and its heritage.

Readers can look forward to a variety of articles including a cross country hurling match, a Maths Genius, a long ago visit home, Bishop Michael Fogarty, The Day Donnacha Ó Dúlaing came to town, Our Dad the Gardener, personal stories, the journey from Newtown, Ballina to the now famous Ballyartella woollen mills, reminiscences from war time Britain, an unholy well, Cumann na mBan in the area, recycling a new concept, the Inchamore Poet, To Hell or to Connacht plus much more. All of these articles are beautifully supported with photographs, bringing history and memory vividly to life.
