Two deaths on local roads
The roads of North Tipperary claimed two more lives in the early hours of Sunday morning last - just the day before the Road Safety Authority (RSA) hosted a moving ceremony in Dublin to launch Ireland’s national commemoration of the 2025 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
The single vehicle collisions, one in Toomevara and the other in Birdhill, resulted in the death of a woman in her 80s and a man in his 40s.
The woman, Carmel Hackett, of Coole, Toomevara, died in the crash in Toomevara while the man, aged in his 40s, was killed in Birdhill.
The crash in Toomevara occurred some time between midnight and 2.20am on Sunday morning.
Mrs Hackett, a mother and a grandmother, was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
The scene of the accident remained closed for some time after the incident to allow a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Traffic diversions were in place.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
Any roadusers who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 12am and 2.30am are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
Gardaí said the Birdhill crash occurred “in the early hours” of Sunday morning.
The man was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaí have carried out a technical examination of the scene.
Gardaí are also appealing for witnesses to this crash. Any road users who may have camera footage and were travelling on the R445 at Birdhill between 10pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday morning are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.
Anyone with information on either collision is asked to contact Nenagh Garda Station on 067 50450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
