Tipp and Cahill commit for new term
By Shane Brophy
Tipperary senior hurling manager Liam Cahill has been ratified for another two years with the option of a third.
The All-Ireland winning boss completed his first three-year term with July’s victory over Cork and Tipperary County Board agreed to the expected extension at their monthly meeting held remotely on Friday, which had been postponed from the previous Monday as a mark of respect to late senior football manager Philly Ryan.
Cahill confirmed the news at the ‘A Night with the Champions’ event at the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh last Friday night and will have the same management team, including Michael Bevans (coach), selectors Declan Laffan and TJ Ryan, and coaching support David Herity.
Tipperary have a busy time ahead as next Saturday, they will have their official team photo taken, as well as being hosted for a civic reception, as well as the Under 20 All-Ireland winning team by Tipperary County Council.
The following Friday, 7th November, the All-Stars will take place in Dublin before the following day the team travel to Cape Town, South Africa on their holiday, but it won’t include Brian, Noel & John McGrath following their county senior hurling final success as Loughmore/Castleiney will be playing their Munster Club semi-final against Eire Og Ennis on November 16th. That trip could also be without Seamus Kennedy and Peter McGarry should Clonmel Commercials go on and win the county senior football title.
The Tipperary senior hurlers will receive their All-Ireland medals at a function at the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh at the end of November before returning to collective training ahead of the new season, with Cahill also confirming their first game will be a challenge match against Limerick in aid of the Dillon Quirke Foundation in Fethard Town Park on December 13th.
Four Tipperary players were involved in Ireland’s Hurling/Shinty International Series win over Scotland in Inverness on Saturday.
Eoghan Connolly brought his dead-ball proficiency by converting two 65’s in the narrow 3-3 to 2-4 win, with Alan Tynan and Darragh McCarthy also featuring, although the latter’s game came to an end in the first half after sustaining a blow to the head and was extremely groggy leaving the field and didn’t return.
Kilruane MacDonagh’s Amy Quinlisk featured on the Ireland team who defeated Scotland in the Camogie/Shinty International.
