Sudden passing of Tipp's football manager

The sudden death has taken place of Tipperary senior football manager and former county goalkeeper, Philly Ryan.

Tipperary GAA said it was "deeply saddened" to announce Mr Ryan's "very untimely death" and described him as "a stalwart of Tipperary football, both as a player and in his later role as manager and coach".

The Clonmel Commercials man is thought to have passed away after collapsing at a GAA match on Saturday morning.

Mr Ryan was appointed Tipperary senior football manager in August 2024 having previously been in charge of the minors and U21s in the 2000s.

He guided his club to a senior county title in 2012 and, prior to taking over the Premier County, he had been coach/selector with Clonmel Commercials.

Ryan is survived by his wife Anna, his son Shane, who is the current Tipperary goalkeeper, daughters Amy and Katie, and his extended family.
