Demolition of Nenagh’s ‘Brewery House’

Tipperary Co Council has granted conditional planning permission for the demolition of a building in Nenagh known as the ‘The Brewery House’.

The derelict and partially collapsed dwelling at Sheahan’s hardware premises on Martyrs Road is to be demolished and replaced with a new warehouse storage building. The building takes its name from the history of malting at the site, which dates back to the eighteenth century.

An architectural conservation report submitted by applicant Paul Sheahan supported demolition of the building and concluded that the move would have minimal impact on the former brewery at the street edge, which is a Protected Structure. The applicant also submitted a bat survey, which stated that internal access was not possible due to the dangerous condition of the building. The survey noted the presence of swift birds at the site.

In granting planning permission, the council required incorporation of measures in accordance with ‘Saving Swifts’, a publication produced by Bird Watch Ireland and the Heritage Council. Among other conditions, the developer was required to engage a suitably qualified archaeologist to monitor all site clearance works and groundworks associated with the development.
