On song Drom quell Silvermines hopes early
CAMOGIE: FBD Insurance Tipperary Senior Championship Quarter Final
Drom & Inch 3-15
Silvermines 0-10
Drom & Inch booked their place in the Tipperary Senior Camogie Championship semi-finals with a commanding performance against Silvermines at The Ragg on Saturday.
Underdogs Silvermines were fancied to cause an upset but their hopes were blown off course inside the opening minute when a goal from Miriam Campion gave the home side the perfect start. They quickly pushed on to lead 1-3 to no score by the tenth minute.
Silvermines eventually got off the mark on seventeen minutes through a Ciara Ryan point, but Drom remained in control.
Mary Burke struck for a second goal on 28 minutes, and by half-time the game already looking beyond doubt with Drom holding a commanding 3-5 to 0-1 advantage. All five points came from Eimear McGrath, who impressed on her first championship start with three frees and two from play.
The game remained physical and hard-fought after the restart, but the Drom & Inch half-back line of Aoife McGrath, Mairead Eviston, and Maureen Ryan were rock solid, making scores difficult for Silvermines to find.
Ellen Cunneen chipped in with two points for the ‘Mines, while Aisling Carey hit four frees and two from play, with Niamh Cunneen also raising a white flag. Despite their efforts, Silvermines never seriously troubled Caoimhe Bourke in the Drom goal.
At the other end, the scores came more freely for Drom & Inch; Eimear McGrath and Miriam Campion remained constant threats in attack, while Mary Burke and Niamh Long put in huge shifts around the field.
Ciara Cahill capped off the performance with two fine second-half points, as Drom-Inch ran out cofortable winners to advance to the semi-finals where they will face holders Clonoulty/Rossmore.
