Council takes in 114 dogs
A total of 114 dogs were surrendered or seized by Tipperary Co Council dog wardens up to the end of last July.
Of these, 72 were sent to rescue, 16 were reclaimed by their owners, three were rehomed and 20 were put to sleep.
Commenting on these figures at this month’s meeting of the council, Cllr Declan Burgess observed that has been a considerable increase in the number of dogs taken in by the council.
Director of Services Eamon Lonergan said there can be an “occasional spike” in the number of dogs seized or surrendered. There was no particular reason for the number this year.
Cllr Bugess also noted that 29 loose horses were seized by the council up to mid-August. Two of these horses were reclaimed by the owners with the remaining 27 being re-homed.
The councillor believed the Department of Agriculture should play a role in horse control as it has responsibility for animal welfare.
