Templederry head into relegation battle in positive mood following win over Boherlahan

GAA: FBD Insurance Tipperary Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship Group 2 Round 3

Templederry Kenyons 3-22

Boherlahan-Dualla 2-18

Report: Michael McCarthy in Cappawhite

In what was a dead rubber game as regards group placings, Templederry Kenyons & Boherlahan/Dualla served up a very entertaining round three game in group 2 of the County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship on Saturday.

Boherlahan played into the breeze in the first half but still got off to the fastest start; Tossy Ryan, Ger O’Dwyer (F) and Mark Downey had the Mid side three to the good inside four minutes.

It looked ominous for Templederry who have added Tipp minor boss James Woodlock to their management team, however, they settled in and in Sean Ryan had an ace in the pack. Ryan got them up and running on five minutes and thirty seconds later reduced the deficit further.

A mix up in the North sides defence saw Seamus Leahy get the first green flag of the game when he pulled to the net from close range.

Templederry responded, Tim McCutcheon’s puckout was worked up field and Sean Ryan knocked it down to himself, rose, swivelled and beat Thomas Breen low to the corner.

Eanna Murray got his first point a minute later and the scores were tied. By the 15th minute, Boherlahan had again stretched the lead to three points with Paddy Gahan, James Murphy and a second from Mark Downey.

This sparked a response from Templederry, and they rattled off five points -in-a-row with the Murrays, Eanna (2) & Colm alongside scores from Sean’s Ryan & Collins, sending the North men into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

The returning Adrian Ryan was causing trouble, and got himself on the scoresheet, but Tossy Ryan and Seamus Leahy reduced the deficit.

Gearoid Ryan, Darragh Carey, and Sean Ryan had Templederry four up approaching the half time whistle, but were dealt a blow when Tossy Ryan stole in for Boherlahan’s second goal to leave just one in it at the break, 1-13 to 2-9.

On the turnaround, Boherlahan were expected to push on with the aid of the breeze, but it was Templederry who took to the game with renewed endeavour, absolutely destroying Boherlahan in the twenty minutes after the break.

Sean Ryan was causing trouble for anyone that came near him, Eanna & Colm Murray along with Adrian Ryan were dominating matters around the middle with Darragh Carey mopping everything up at the back.

In that spell they outscored their opponents 2-7 to 0-3; the goals coming from Sean Ryan and Sean Collins, who got on the end of a sublime Ryan pass.

Boherlahan would finish the game the stronger, but the north side had enough done. Colm Murray rounded off the scoring from a free for a seven-point winning margin.

The win and performance will give Templederry a lot of confidence as they head into relegation mire, but with a forward of Sean Ryan’s quality and Darragh Carey in form, they should have enough to hold their position. The return of Adrian Ryan is also a huge addition.

It was always a tricky game for Boherlahan-Dualla, avoiding injury was the name of the game for a team already qualified for a quarter-final.

While they will be disappointed with the result, it’s not something they will dwell on too much. They have a forward star of their own in Tossy Ryan and he will take some minding for whomever they draw. The midfield partnership of Charlie & Euan Ryan gets through a lot of work while the half back line of Dylan Fogarty and the O’Dwyer’s, Ger & Martin Paul, give them a serious platform to push on.
