Nenagh Ormond Brass Band will perform in Cobh on September 30.

Exciting outing for Nenagh band

Nenagh Ormond Brass will travel to Cobh, Co Cork, on Saturday, September 13, to participate in an exciting afternoon of band music.

In addition to the Nenagh band, other bands participating will be the local Cobh Confraternity Brass and Reed Band and St John's Band, Limerick, who celebrate 160 years in existence.

The event is being organised by Cobh Confraternity Band with support from the Arts Office of Cork County Council and Cobh Tourism.

Following their lunch, both bands will perform on the bandstand in John F Kennedy Park, Cobh.

The exciting finale will involve the Cobh, Nenagh and St John's bands coming together to give a joint massed bands recital on the Port of Cork quayside, Cobh, for the passengers and crew of the big cruise liner, Regal Princess, carrying 3,600 passengers, departing Cobh.

This event is supported by the Arts Office, Cork County Council.

The Nenagh Ormond Band is an integral part of the musical and cultural life of the North Tipperary town. It has performed for numerous local events and has participated in many fundraising ventures. The visit to Cobh will definitely be an exciting venture for the band.

The present Nenagh Brass Band was formed in 1977 but the town's band tradition goes back way further than that. There was a very active Brass and Reed Band in the town during the 1940s.

Thanks to the archive section of the Nenagh Guardian, we know that a new Brass Band was formed in the town in 1925 and prior to that the archives point out a band existed in the town 40 years previously, stretching the tradition back to the late 1800s at least.
