Star forward Jason Forde was the Silvermines hero once more as his haul of 1-14 outscored the entire Templederry side in a fairly entertaining County Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship round 2 game on Saturday evening.

The Tipp star operated on the forty and the move from centre back where he played the early rounds worked a treat with his well-taken goal in the 45th minute proving to be the turning point after his former Tipp teammate Sean Ryan had scored a great goal a minute earlier.

The ‘Mines were worthy of their win, having led 0-12 to 0-7 at half time but Forde’s goal had them 1-15 to 1-11 in front and they dominated the last quarter outscoring the Kenyons 0-6 to 0-1, the latter not helped by losing John Kennedy to a second yellow card in the 51st minute.

Silvermines now face Eire Og Anacarty in an all or nothing game and their win was helped by a more careful display as Sean McGrath, Luke O’Brien, Ronan Sherlock and Darragh McKelvey shone with Noel Quirke and Darragh Nolan quietly efficient as they kept the Templederry attack to 1-6 from play.

Paddy Leamy, Conor McKelvey were others to shine with Danny Quinn continuing to be an effective man on the edge of the square.

Quinn might not have it all his way when he was well marshalled by an evergreen Thomas Stapleton who grew better as the game continued while Darragh Carey, Liam McCutcheon and Sean Ryan could not be faulted for their efforts as the Kenyons face into a relegation battle ahead of their final group game against Boherlahan-Dualla.

With four frees and a sideline ball, Jason Forde had five of his total accumulated in the first half with the ‘Mines other scores coming from Cathal Treacy and Danny Quinn before the ever present Paddy Leamy struck his third to make it 0-11 to 0-4 after 28 minutes.

The Templederry four points had come from Eanna Murray (free), Colm Murray and Liam McCutcheon from play before Sean Ryan scored his second in the 29th minute.

Jason Forde responded with a brilliant sideline ball and as play entered additional time Templederry had time to see both Eanna and Colm Murray land a free each.

Silvermines were the better team but lapses of concentration almost cost them two goals when their short puckout policy almost came a cropper.

Sean Ryan’ close range free followed by Eanna Murray’s only score from play plus another Ryan score helped ease Templederry back into contention.

With Conor McKelvey very much on the ball, his ability to win frees earned Jason Forde the chance to convert two back to back as Eanna Murray and Forde traded placed balls to make it 0-15 to 0-11 on 43 minutes.

Then, a minute later, the game received a major boost when a Templederry attack ended up in the ‘Mines net after Sean Ryan scored after stealing possession from Luke O’Brien.

The teams had barely time to take in what happened when the ‘Mines were on the attack and Jason Forde was careering through the Templederry cover before sending a two handed slam to the net.

Two minutes later, Forde increased his team’s lead after Conor McKelvey was fouled after catching Conor Murphy’s puckout. Eanna Murray replied with a free in what was to be Templederry’s last score on 49 minutes. At the other end, Templederry goalkeeper Philip Kennedy produced a great save to deny Darragh Treacy.

That was the beginning of the end for Templederry as the ‘Mines were hurling comfortable and in the run into to the end Jason Forde hit four unanswered points to run out nine point winners.
