Carey points Silvermines to winning start in Senior Camogie Championship

CAMOGIE: FBD Insurance Tipperary Senior Championship Group 2 Round 2

Cashel King Cormacs 0-12

Silvermines 0-14

Silvermines made a winning start to their County Senior Camogie Championship campaign with an away win over Cashel King Cormacs at Leahy Park on Saturday evening.

After suffering a heavy defeat to Thurles Sarsfields the previous weekend, Cashel were keen to bounce back with a strong performance, but despite battling hard, things never quite clicked for them against a Silvermines side who had a bye in the opening round.

It was an evenly contested first half with little to separate the sides. After ten minutes the sides were level at three points apiece. Cashel then edged ahead with two unanswered scores.

The sides were back level again in the seventeenth after a brace of well-executed frees from Silvermines Aisling Carey. Carey who has operated in goals the last few years was very effective at full forward with excellent accuracy from frees and play.

Cashel found their scores in the opening half through the accuracy of Anna Fahie, who struck four frees, while Grace Moloney added three excellent points from play. Further efforts from Philly Fogarty and Anna O’Brien ensured the sides went in level at the break, 0-9 apiece.

Silvermines kept themselves well in the contest throughout the half with Ellen & Niamh Cunneen chipping in with key scores.

The second half followed a similar pattern, but Cashel struggled to convert chances when it mattered most. Fahie and Fogarty both pointed from placed balls, while Hannah Butler chipped in with a fine score from play. However, it was Silvermines who finished stronger, with Carey again proving decisive as she added four more points to her tally, backed up by scores from Maeve and Ellen Cunneen.

At the final whistle, Silvermines deservedly edged the contest by two points, a result that will leave Cashel frustrated and will have to regroup quickly with their next outing coming this evening (Wednesday, August 27th) when they face Burgess-Duharra at Leahy Park.
