Borrisokane to immortalise legend Mackey McKenna
Borrisokane GAA Club is honouring one of its hurling heroes, the great John ‘Mackey’ McKenna, this Saturday, 30th August at 6.00pm in its clubs grounds, Gardiner Park.
The Club will unveil a monument to commemorate Mackey's stellar career with Club and County, the highlight being the winning of four All Ireland Senior Hurling medals in the Blue & Gold of Tipperary in the 1960’s.
All-Ireland winning Tipperary senior hurling manager Liam Cahill will be on hand to cut the ribbon to officially launch the monument, for a man who won 2 North Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Championships with his beloved Borrisokane in 1958 and 1973.
He joined the Tipperary senior panel in 1961 and won the first of four All-Ireland senior hurling medals later that year and added three more in 1962, 64 & 65.
He also won six Munster Championship medals in 1961, 62, 64, 65, 67 & 68. He also has 4 National League medals from 1961, 64, 65 & 68, while he also won a Railway Cup with Munster in 1966.
Many of the surviving members of that great Tipperary team of the 1960’s will also be on hand.
Borrisokane GAA extends an open invitation to all past and present players, and indeed all Borrisokane and Tipperary GAA supporters to join them in paying tribute to Mackey who celebrated his 87th birthday earlier this year.
