Nenagh athlete to compete in World Transplant Games
A NENAGH woman will be competing for Ireland in the World Transplant Games in Dresden, Germany, starting today, August 16, and running until August 24.
Sheila Gregan will be representing her country in her 13th Transplant Games, joining over 2,000 fellow transplant athletes from around the world to celebrate life, resilience, and second chances.
Sheila underwent two kidney transplants, the first in 1986 and the second in 2006.
Despite her illness, she got into sport and finds it great for her overall health. “The older I get, the more I realise how powerful staying fit is - not just for your body, but for your mind,” she says.
Going into the world tests, Sheila carries the memory of the late Orla Hogan, a beloved teammate from Nenagh, who also competed in Transplant Games.
“Orla’s courage and determination continue to inspire me. Her steeliness still drives me to compete at my best,” says Sheila.
In previous games, Sheila has competed in road running races, swimming events and in triathlon.
Her 28 team mates will also be competing in athletics, tennis, pétanque, darts, cycling, archery, golf and bowling.
