HER Outdoors Week inspires women and girls to get outside and get active as it celebrates its fifth year

Sport Ireland has announced the return of HER Outdoors Week, which celebrates and encourages women and girls of all ages to get involved in outdoor activities and sports.

Now in its fifth year, HER Outdoors Week (August 11th-17th) aims to get more women and girls to embrace the outdoors, try something new, and discover the joy, freedom, and community the outdoors offers.

Sport Ireland CEO Dr Úna May said: “HER Outdoors Week is all about celebrating the benefits of being in and exercising in the outdoors and bringing visibility to female participation in sport and physical activity.

“Through HER Outdoors Week, programmes and events are inspiring women and girls to embrace the outdoors and discover the wide range of activities available right on their doorstep. From guided walks to forest yoga, this week showcases outdoor pursuits that are welcoming, inclusive, and empowering.”

HER Outdoors Week - which is supported by Local Sports Partnerships, National Governing Bodies, clubs and community groups - offers outdoor events such as kayaking, hiking, sea swimming, and more. Many events are free.

Ciara Munnelly, Outdoors Recreation Manager at Sport Ireland, said: “The week brings a real buzz, with thousands of women and girls taking part in a wide range of activities they may never have tried before. Initiatives like this are vital not only to raise awareness of the benefits of outdoor recreation but also to shine a spotlight on the many opportunities for women to get outside, be active, and feel empowered in nature.”

Bethany Carson, Women in Sport Manager at Sport Ireland, said: “When we launched HER Outdoors Week we were aware that women and girls wanted to be more active and adventurous in the outdoors but were unsure where or how to start, what was near them, and could they participate without fear of judgement.
