Council implored to move boat at Ballina Quay

The Cathaoirleach of the Nenagh Municipal District, Cllr Phyll Bugler, has implored Tipperary County Council to take action to remove an old boat that has says has been moored at Ballina Quay for the past nine months.

Speaking at the July meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District, Cllr Bugler said it was a very bad reflection on the council that it had not removed the vessel, which had sunk and was detracting from the image of the lakeside area.

She suggested that the council introduce bylaws aimed at boat owners who abandon their boats in the harbours of Lough Derg and along the banks of the Shannon.

Manager of the district, Liam Brett, said it was the function of the boat owners to take responsibility for their unsightly vessels, not the council. He would not like the message to go out there that it was the responsibility of the council to move abandoned boats.

However, Cllr Bugler said the council had control of Ballina Quay and felt that it had a responsibility to maintain its image.

“The boat is there for nine months and we want to have it moved on. It is an environmental concern for all of us,” she said.

Mr Brett said numerous efforts had already been made by the council to get the boat moved. He said he would be happy to discuss the matter after the meeting with Cllr Bugler.
