John’s charity skydive for Youth Suicide Prevention
Over €1,800 raised by local man
John McCabe from Hogan’s Pass, Nenagh, has just completed a 13,000ft skydive in aid of Youth Suicide Prevention in Tipperary. So far John has raised €1,820 towards his cause.
“It was on the bucket-list. I always wanted to do it,” explained 27-year-old John, who on Sunday completed his skydive with the Irish Parachute Club in Offaly.
“I was scrolling on social media and I saw an ad to do a charity skydive for Youth Suicide Prevention and awareness, and I just thought I might as well do it,” he said, explaining how the idea to do a charity skydive came to mind.
The Skydiving Experience
John said the skydive was a wonderful experience.“It was just like a really cool rollercoaster basically - I’d recommend it to anyone. It was brilliant, I’ll have to do it again.”
Along with experiencing the thrill of skydiving, John has been able to raise money for Youth Suicide and Prevention in Tipperary.
“There were a number of suicides in and around Nenagh a few months ago.
“I would’ve gone to school with one of the lads who took his own life,” commented John, revealing why he wanted to raise money for Youth Suicide and Prevention in Tipperary.
“It just seems like something we should be taking as seriously as we can and anything I can do to support it, I might as well,” he continued.
Target exceeded
John added that he managed to raise a lot more than his initial target. “The initial goal was to raise €600, and it hit the €600 after a while.
“I was then very shocked when my mother rang me and told me that the Ballycommon Ladies Club was going to donate €400, which really bumped it up.
“I’m grateful to everyone who has helped me. There’s about 40 odd separate donations from people which is lovely to see.
“The whole point of doing it was to raise money for mental health and suicide prevention,” he explained.
According to John, the option is there for anyone to complete a charity skydive if they so wish.
“People can donate to my fundraiser, or they can set up their own up and do a skydive themselves.
“I’m pretty sure they do it year-round so if anyone would like to raise money for suicide prevention, the option is there for people to create their own and to gather donations themselves,” explained John.
