It happened in Templemore in 1986
Pat Fogarty, Lacey Avenue, opened his brand new fireplace centre in Gurtacurra, Killea in July, while Triplex Glass Factory announced in September that it was to close after almost 48 years in Templemore.
The news came as a shattering blow to the town with the loss of 100 jobs. Christmas shopping was encouraged in the town.
The deaths took place in 1986 of Kathleen Kelly (née Kevin), mother of Jim Kelly, solicitor; Rody Shelly, Sean Treacy, Bridget Coleman, Neddy Hanley, Joe Hennessy, John Paul Doherty, Lacey Avenue; John Martin, The Cross, Clonmore (unexpectedly); Bridget Dempsey, Church Street; Alice Long, Main Street; Mary McGrath, Main Street, wife of butcher Andy; Michael Corbett, Park Road; Annie Maher, Corner House and Mart Bar; John Egan, Cloone; Jim Higgins, father to Maudie O’Shea, Main Street; representing Lakeside, Kevin Fahy, Johnny Foy, Kevin Foy, Sean Collum and Dermot Hennessy won the Gold medal in Pitch and Putt at the Community Games in Mosney, having finished third two years previously.
Tom Collum was appointed as North Tipperary Juvenile Liaison officer for the Garda Síochána in June.
The Sage family opened a half-price shop opposite Triplex, which offered a large selection in men's and ladies, and operated between 2 and 5pm on Sundays.
The Christian Brothers ended their 54-year association with the town having arrived in 1954.
At a function held in the Templemore Arms in June they donated their monastery on Bank Street to the Templemore Social Services. Two brothers then commuted daily from Thurles to each in Templemore.
Brooklyn D’Estelle-Roe opened a DR glass on Main Street (currently 119). Glass in its various forms, decorative, etc, runs in the family as Brooklyn’s father spent many years in the business.
Joe Dolan drew a huge crowd to the Templemore Arms hotel in February.
