parkrun Ireland launches new Dementia Manual in Partnership with HSE
parkrun Ireland, supported by presenting partner Vhi, is proud to partner with the HSE for the Dementia: Understand Together campaign.
The Dementia: Understand Together campaign, led by the HSE in partnership with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Age Friendly Ireland, Age and Opportunity, the Dementia Services Information and Development Centre, and Healthy Ireland, aims to raise awareness and reduce stigma around dementia.
The partnership with parkrun supports this goal by encouraging a more understanding, compassionate and inclusive approach to community activity.
The manual provides practical guidance and tips to help parkrun volunteers and communities support participants affected by dementia. It reflects parkrun’s ongoing commitment to removing barriers to participation and promoting physical, social, and mental wellbeing for all.
Speaking at the launch, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Emma Blain commended parkrun and the HSE for partnering on this important initiative: "Dublin is a city that values compassion, inclusion, and community. I warmly welcome the launch of the parkrun Dementia Manual and commend parkrun Ireland and the HSE for their leadership in this area. This initiative will not only enrich the lives of those living with dementia but also help foster greater understanding and empathy in communities across Ireland."
Jenny Branigan, Territory Manager of parkrun Ireland added: "At parkrun, we believe that community is at the heart of wellbeing, and that includes creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and supported. The launch of the parkrun Dementia Manual marks an important step in our journey to ensure people living with dementia, their families, and carers can continue to enjoy the benefits of walking, running, volunteering, and social connection. We’re incredibly proud to partner with the HSE’s Dementia: Understand Together campaign to make our events even more inclusive."
Dr Seán O'Dowd, Consultant Neurologist, Tallaght University Hospital and Clinical Lead, HSE National Dementia Services, also added: “Staying active and connected are vital for both our brain health and our general wellbeing.
"For people living with dementia and those caring to support them, this can have a real impact on their day to day lives and short and long-term health outcomes. Initiatives like the parkrun dementia manual demonstrate how simple, practical actions can help to make a big difference in encouraging people to continue with hobbies and interests, and also to try something new. This resource is a fantastic example of how partnerships can promote understanding, and create environments that are truly welcoming for all."
The manual is now available to order online. It is also a great resource for community groups, health professionals, and families looking to support loved ones in staying active and engaged.
