Multi-agency exercise in Killaloe

On Saturday week last, the people on Killaloe and Ballina were delighted to hear that the Irish Coast Guard Rescue helicopter R115 was on a training and not a rescue mission.

Units in attendance at this multi-agency exercise in the Smith O’Brien GAA grounds included Killaloe Coast Guard, Killaloe Fire and Rescue, Critical Killaloe/Ballina CFR group, Clare Civil Defence, and members of An Garda Síochána from the Killaloe station.

After a detailed brief from the crew of R115, all in attendance were given hands-on experience in stretcher handling, while the helicopter was running; practice under the downdraft, while helicopter was in a hover; drills while members were being winched to the helicopter and back to the ground.

This was vital training for all agencies in preparation for any emergencies in the locality. Killaloe Coast Guard greatly appreciates the generosity of the Smith O’Brien GAA & Camogie club for permitting the use of the grounds.
