Africa Day in Borrisokane
Unity Youth Hub organised a performance in Borrisokane as part of Africa Day, May 25.
It took almost two months for rehearsals and practice before the performance. In good weather we practiced in Borrisokane Town Park, and when it was raining we did rehearsals in the Silver Arch office, which became a real hub for Borrisokane group.
The boys group played traditional music on African drums. The actors performed in the play ‘Talking Drum’.
It is a story about two African tribes, once united, that fall into conflict when their chiefs argue over land. Their children, Ayo and Zainab, seek help from Baba Dele, keeper of the magical talking drum. The drum’s music restores peace and joy, reuniting the tribes in celebration, harmony, and the spirit of togetherness.
The performance was interspersed with singing and dancing. Unity Fashion Hub made costumes for the actors, drummers and dancers.
On the day of the performance, everyone was involved. The Ukrainian volunteers decorated the community centre. Children and young people were happy to show their talents and feel they are special.
Many thanks to NTDC, which organised the Africa Day event for the local community. The parents were also involved and brought delicious national food and wore the fabulous costumes.
Special thanks to the volunteers who helped to make the performance: Lynn Chan (director), Anastasiia Popova (costume designer), Oksana Kolyadenko, Larysa Slutska, Antonina Travnikova, Nataliia Serova, Maria Kovalova (volunteers). They donated their time and helped to prepare the performance.
