Tipperary proved too strong for the second time this year at Under 23 level against Waterford as they ran out seventeen-point winners in their third game in the All-Ireland Championship on Saturday.
When these sides met in Munster Championship at Colligan back in April, it was very obvious that Tipperary had much more work done than Waterford had at that point, and while it could be seen that the Deise had upped what they had done in between, missing the influential Róisín Kirwan was a big blow. The St. Anne’s club-player postponed a holiday that she had booked by a couple of days to play against Kilkenny in the opening round of fixtures a week earlier.
While the Portlaw grounds were in suburb condition for this game, the weather conditions at times made things very difficult.
From a very early stage it looked like this game would end in one way. The only thing to be decided was the margin of victory for the Premier County.
Able to call on a number of players that helped Tipperary to win the Premier Junior All-Ireland Final last year, the visitors raced into an early lead with points from Hannah Butler, Aoife Dwyer, and Danielle Ryan.
The game’s first goal came on eight minutes when Hannah Butler cut down the dressing rooms side of the field and shot past Hayleigh Acheson in the Waterford goal.
Rhona Drohan opened Waterford’s account on nine minutes, but scores from Danielle Ryan and Anna Fahie quenched any hopes Waterford had of getting into the game after getting on the board.
Rachel O’Brien pointed from a free for the home side, but it was followed with scores from Crace Moloney and Aoife Dwyer before Rachel O’Brien pointed again from a placed ball to leave the home side trailing 1-7 to 0-3 at the break.
Aoife Dwyer opened the second half scoring with was followed with scores at the other end by Rachel O’Brien and Laoise Forest.
Hannah Butler, Eabha Dolan, and Aoife Fitzgerald pointed for the visitors to stretch their lead to nine with nine minutes of the second half played.
Laoise Forest pointed again from a free for the home side, but it was followed with scores at the other end from Aoife Dwyer with a brace and once from Danielle Ryan.
Hannah Butler netted a second goal for her side in the closing minutes, while Ciara Gleeson, Caoimhe McCormack and Paula Quirke also getting on the score sheet.
