A Michael Murphy goal from a free helped Tipperary to a 1-4 to 0-4 half time lead. Against the strong wind, Tipp fell three points behind before fighting back with the help of an Austin Buckley goal which proved crucial.

1981 at Walsh Park: Tipp 2-16 Kilkenny 0-10

Tipp were four points to the good when Donie O’Connell scored their first goal in the 22nd minute to help them to a 1-8 to 0-4 half time lead.

The Munster champions put the game to bed early in the second half when O’Connell scored the second goal. A Billy Walton penalty gave Kilkenny some hope, but Tipperary eased to a twelve-point win as Nenagh’s Philip Kennedy earned the feat of skippering Tipp to back-to-back All-Ireland titles.

Tipperary rued their failure to convert a host of goal chances with Kilkenny goalkeeper David Burke inspired, including saving a penalty with Ray Heffernan converting one at the other end for a 1-5 to 0-6 half time lead and managed to keep Tipp at arm’s length.

An early goal from John McGrath helped Tipp to a 1-5 to 0-2 lead at half time. Against the breeze, Tipp withstood a Kilkenny fightback in the final quarter with the help of goals from Joe Walsh and Paul Cleere, but Tipp held on.

Defending champions Tipperary always trailed as goals from Paul Treacy and DJ Carey helped Kilkenny to a 2-5 to 1-4 half time lead with Ger Deely scoring the Tipp goal. Tipp were back within one point but never managed to get on terms with Adrian Ronan’s six points key to Kilkenny’s win.

Kilkenny goaled after three minutes through Brendan Ryan to push into a 1-6 to 0-5 lead at half time. The Tipp management made a number of switches at half time, one of which saw Philip O’Dwyer come into the team to make his very first appearance and his goal put Tipperary in front, and they never looked back.

Tipp opted to play against the wind but at half-time the game was over as the home side led 2-12 to 1-1, with Conor Phelan and Cha Fitzpatrick getting the Kilkenny goals with Michael Farrell getting the Tipp’s reply. Willie O’Dwyer scored Kilkenny’s third after half time.

Another star-studded Kilkenny side led 0-9 to 0-8 at half time but a 36th minute 21-yard free to the net by Darragh Egan gave Tipp belief. A Richie Power goal brought Kilkenny level before a Niall Teehan goal on 53 minutes nudged Tipp back in front and built a three-point lead with Richie Hogan goaling with the last puck of the game to force a replay.

2006 Replay at Semple Stadium: Kilkenny 1-11 Tipperary 0-11

The replay took place six days later and was once again a tight affair with Paddy Hogan’s first half goal the difference. Danny O’Hanlon started for Tipp in the replay, scoring two points as did Philip Austin off the bench.

2008 at Croke Park: Kilkenny 2-13 Tipp 0-15

There was a lot of expectation around this Tipp team backboned by two All-Ireland minor winning squads but two goals from Matthew Ruth were the difference in the game where Tipp look back on a penalty not awarded late on after Patrick Maher was dragged down when two points separated the sides.
