Tipperary exiles Croker-bound with New York hurlers
By Larry Cooney
On a wet and miserable afternoon in TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar, last Saturday, there was plenty of Tipperary interest in the visiting New York hurling team who were taking on Monaghan in the Lory Meagher Cup semi-final.
After a sluggish opening half and particularly in the first quarter the class of the exiles finally began to show on the scoreboard after opening up an eight-point interval lead after playing with a strong wind.
But New York’s half-time break certainly seemed to have the desire effect as they raced into an unassailable lead and finally prevailed on a scoreline of 1-29 to 2-13.
Among the Tipperary born players involved in the action were midfielder Tom O’Meara from Kiladangan and forwards Cian Mullane from Clerihan and Player-of-the-Match Aidan James Willis from Portroe who top scored with 1-7 – all from play. Other Tipperary panellists included Clonoulty/Rossmore’s Conor Hammersley and Colin O’Brien from Silvermines.
New York face Cavan in the decider at Croke Park next Saturday, 31st May at 3.00pm as part of a triple header with the Nicky Rackard (Mayo v Roscommon) and Christy Ring Cup (Derry v London) finals.
