Twomey and Lordan claim the plaudits
Tipperary Racing Scene
Having finished runner-up to Nautical Flow on his debut on soft ground at Cork in mid-April, the Paddy Twomey-trained three-year-old Arouet turned the tables on Johnny Murtagh’s charge to win the 10-furlong median auction race at Roscommon.
The Timothy Ryan-owned three-year-old had a length and three-parts to find but on 5lbs better terms, he comfortably reversed the earlier form when winning by two lengths under Billy Lee at odds of 7/4 favourite.
Danny Mullins landed two winners on horses trained in Tipperary at Killarney.
He teamed up with his old ally John Ryan to win the two and a half-mile handicap hurdle on the 7/2 joint-favourite My Gaffer for owner Walter O’Connor. The seven-year-old made all the running to win by three and a quarter lengths from Henry de Bromhead’s Popova on which Sean Flanagan replaced Rachael Blackmore who had announced her retirement only an hour earlier.
The Joe Murphy-trained 6/1 chance Gabriel Ranger gave Danny Mullins his second success in the handicap chase over the same distance. The Tadhg O'Sullivan-owned six-year-old registered his second career win when getting the better of Paul Gilligan’s shot by a neck.
Aidan O'Brien edged out Paddy Twomey as he won the eight-furlong maiden for three-year-olds with the Wayne Lordan-ridden Gun Carriage at Killarney on Tuesday. A big drifter in the betting, Gun Carriage was sent off the 11/10 favourite and he refused to lie down when tackled by Twomey’s very well supported 6/4 chance Standard Deviation, prevailing by a nose.
Andy Slattery and Sam Coen were winners again as Harry The Rogue took the eight-furlong handicap. The Seamus McGrath-owned four-year-old added to last month’s Naas success when racing to a two and three-parts of a length win over the Tom Dowling-trained Saxon Kingdom. The first two horses home were both returned at odds of 9/2.
John Ryan added to his winner at Killarney on Monday when saddling a double at Sligo on Tuesday. This time Daniel King rode his winner and the pair kicked off with Kate Knows Best winning the mares’ maiden hurdle. A 3/1 chance in the trainer’s own colours, she made all the running and saw off the challenge of Gavin Cromwell’s favourite Kabylia to score by three and a half lengths.
Odds-on favourite Huntsgrove completed the double with a more hard-fought success in the two and a half-mile maiden hurdle. Another owned by Ryan himself, the seven-year-old rallied well before the final hurdle and wore down Ian Donoghue’s front-running 40/1 shot Gradny Lane close to the finish to win by a head.
A runner-up on the Eric McNamara-trained Olord to Eoin McCarthy’s Shadow Paddy in an earlier handicap hurdle, Jake Coen later shared a winner with McNamara when taking the three-mile one-furlong maiden hurdle on Bitofajokelike at Tipperary on Wednesday.
In the colours of The Jokers Partnership, the 11/4 favourite led on the turn into the straight and he just held the rallying Kildinan Prince for trainer Jonathan Sweeney, by a head.
Ballycahill trainer Eddie Power landed the concluding bumper with his odds-on favourite Sunny South West which was recording his second victory having won at Clonmel in March. Ridden by Adam Ryan, the 5/6 chance made all the running and drew clear inside the final furlong to win by eight and a half lengths from the Dermot McLoughlin-trained Angelo Dundee for owner Sean Dalton.
The Corner House Syndicate-owned Expound won the two-mile handicap hurdle for Denis Hogan and Daniel King at Clonmel on Thursday. The 11/2 chance made most of the running and scored by a length and three-parts from Eoin Griffin’s joint-favourite Miss Gherkin.
Harry Swan rode his third bumper winner for Gordon Elliott this month when landing the finale on Carsons Dreamboat. The Pioneer Racing-owned 11/4 favourite led early in the straight and drew right away to win by all of fifteen lengths from the Eamon Sheehy-trained Biddy Early.
John Ryan was a winner again as the six-year-old Ad Caelum scored a narrow success in the three-mile handicap hurdle at Kilbeggan on Friday. Ridden by Sean O'Keeffe, the 8/1 shot came from the back of the field and only led in the final strides to pip the Matthew Smith-trained Dartan by a head.
Aidan O'Brien landed the first of his weekend winners as the Wayne Lordan-ridden Italy took the seven-furlong maiden for two-year-olds at Leopardstown on Friday. A strong 4/9 favourite on his debut, he got on top close to the finish to beat the Fozzy Stack-trained Thesecretadversary by three-parts of a length.
Ryan Moore was in the saddle as the seven-year-old Kyprios set himself up for another tilt at the Gold Cup at next month’s Royal Ascot with a one and a half-length success in the Group 3 Saval Beg Levmoss Stakes. A 1/14 favourite, he saw off the Adrian Murray-trained Dallas Star.
Apprentice Wayne Hassett partnered the Joseph O'Brien-trained Fortuna Vera to win the 10-furlong handicap. Owned by the Annus Mirabilis Syndicate, the 11/4 favourite came with his challenge over a furlong out and he got on top close to the finish to score by a length and a quarter from John McConnell’s Pepper Noir.
Aidan O'Brien sent out three winners at Navan on Saturday where Chris Hayes and Wayne Lordan shared in his success.
Hayes was in the saddle as the 7/1 chance Gstaad got up in the dying strides to deny the Lordan-ridden odds-on favourite True Love, another trained by O’Brien, by three-parts of a length in the opening near six-furlong maiden for two-year-olds.
Lordan went a place better to win the five-furlong maiden for three-year-olds on the 13/8 favourite Seattle. He led inside the final furlong to beat Andy Oliver’s Sun Soldier by one and a quarter lengths.
1/2 favourite Scandinavia completed the trainer’s treble and a double for Lordan in the 10-furlong maiden. He led over two furlongs out and came home a three and three-parts of a length winner from Jessica Harrington’s Carthusian.
Kevin Coleman won the near six-furlong handicap with the Jack Kearney-ridden Devil’s Angel. Owned by the One In A Million Partnership, the 16/1 shot readily defied top-weight as he beat Andy Slattery’s joint-favourite My Girl Sioux by a length and a quarter.
6/4 favourite Carmers was another winner for Paddy Twomey and Billy Lee when landing the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Yeats Stakes. The Ballinrobe maiden winner followed up in some style as he raced to a three-length win over the Adrian Murray-trained What’s Your Game.
Another winning favourite was the Joey Sheridan-ridden Makaiah which took the 13-furlong handicap for trainer Ger O’Leary. The 100/30 chance led over a furlong from the finish, and she was well on top in beating John McConnell’s Fine Print by two lengths.
Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore had to settle for just one winner at Naas on Sunday where Charles Darwin added to his earlier win at Navan in the five-furlong race for two-year-olds.
A 1/14 favourite, he picked up well early inside the final furlong to win by three and a quarter lengths from the Fozzy Stack-trained Cardiff By The Sea.
Donnacha O'Brien and Gavin Ryan took the eight-furlong fillies’ maiden with the three-year-old Sound Of Lightning. Less than two lengths separated the first six horses home with the 13/2 chance winning by three-parts of a length from Johnny Murtagh’s Shakazia.
