Support from locals has been phenomenal

The Darkness Into Light team were out on the streets of Nenagh on Saturday last, April 26, to promote and register people for this year’s Darkness into Light event which takes place at 4.15am on May 10.

The support from local people, as always, has been phenomenal. Local businesses have donated spot prizes to be raffled to raise funds for the event. Individuals have contacted the team to donate and to volunteer, and there are a number of local schools engaging in fundraising activities  - all to raise awareness and funds to support the work being done by Pieta.

Darkness Into Light is the main fundraising event for Pieta. In 2023, 40 per cent of clients were under the age of 18 and 60 per cent were under the age of 25.

Pieta delivered over 50,000 hours of intervention and bereavement counselling and received over 100,000 crisis support calls and texts through their 24-hour freephone helpline. The organisation also directly supported over 700 households devastated by the loss of a loved one by suicide.

Pieta would not be able to continue their services without your help. The Darkness Into Light event is extremely special because it shows the great community spirit and unity that we have as we walk united in the fight against suicide and self-harm.

I really feel that the awareness that is raised by this event is more powerful that we can imagine. If walking together and showing people that they are not alone helps one single person in our community, that itself is a great achievement.

We are all familiar with the horrific statistics of the numbers of those who we have lost to suicide. What we don’t know are the numbers of those who we have saved. I believe that this number is far higher.

THANK YOU

Thanks to the people of Nenagh and the local gardaí for being a great sport, as we held a very successful registration day in Nenagh on Saturday.

It is not too late to register for this year’s Darkness Into Light event as registration is still open online if you click on the following website: www.darknessintolight.ie and follow the instructions. You can also register on the morning of the event if you wish.

Darkness Into Light will take place on Saturday, May 10, at 4.15am from the Scouts Hall, Nenagh. We will take the same route as in recent years  - a five-kilometre walk in total.

For more details or to volunteer, please check out our Facebook and Instagram pages.

We look forward to seeing you all on May 10 at this annual community event.
