A pet is for life - not just for Christmas

Christmas is often a time when adults decide to buy a pet for children, but how much thought is put into this decision?

Tipperary Friends of Animals SPCA would like to ask people to carefully consider the responsibility involved in getting a pet at Christmas, or indeed any other occasion. When we welcome a new pet into our home, we must consider the responsibility that we are taking on.

Unlike wild animals who are used to fending for themselves, pets become totally dependent on their owners, who can give them a great life, or a miserable one. Prospective owners need to consider what type of pet would suit their lifestyle. They need to consider if they can commit to caring for the pet for the rest of its life; if they have the facilities needed; the time to look after them properly, and if they can afford the costs involved. These include food, worming, vaccinations, neutering as well as vet care when sick or injured. They must also consider what arrangements they will make for caring for the pet when they go on holidays, including kennel fees. Ireland is currently in an animal welfare crisis with so many unwanted pets. Animal rescues are full with many more on waiting lists.

A survey done by MADRA found that there were 2,924 dogs in rescue centres on October 1 this year, which is just the tip of the iceberg of unwanted dogs. There are no statistics for the number of unwanted cats, but it is way greater than the number of dogs. Tipperary Friends of Animals SPCA urges all pet owners to neuter their pets unless they want to responsibly breed a litter. The Society runs a low cost neutering scheme for pets whose owners cannot afford the full cost.

The local charity has cats and dogs available for adoption, and regularly posts pictures and information about them on its Facebook page. They also have a shop on Friar St, Nenagh.

Please consider them as an option if looking for a pet this Christmas. And remember - a pet is for life - not just for Christmas. Contact Tipperary Friends of Animals on 086 8163707 or 087 7770785.
