Tipp property under the hammer on October 2
A 135ac farm of land at Redwood near the famous monastic site at Lorrha is in the most northerly corner Tipperary and comes to auction in October. Lorrha is 8km east of Portumna,18km west of Birr and 12km north of Borrisokane. An abbey was founded on the site by St Ruadhán in the sixth century and survived several Viking raids including one led by raided by Turgesius in 843. It was still a monastic site monastic site when the Normans arrived with their own monks led by Walter De Burgh, who convinced the Dominicans found a friary in Lorrha in the 12th century. Not to be outdone, the Augustinians also founded an abbey there at the same time. A Church of Ireland church stands on the site of St Ruadhán’s foundation and today the broader site holds a wide range of ecclesiastical ruins.
Monasteries were rarely founded on poor land and the 135ac farm being sold by Nenagh auctioneer Eoin Dillon is testament to that. Being offered in three lots and an entire it has lots of road frontage, a small yard and cattle handling facilities.
The largest lot extending to 103.43ac is described by Mr Dillon as a combination of very good ground, forestry and some that would be regarded as summer grazing. It is serviced by a number of farm roadways and would be ideal for dairying. Facilities include three loading and feeding pens and a mains water supply. It comes with a guide of €750,000 or €7,250/ac.
The second lot is a 15.24ac section of good quality land and a small yard that includes a four-column slatted shed and a cattle crush. While this piece does not have an independent water supply, mains water is available from the farmyard on the larger lot a supply that is also available from the road. This parcel has a guide of €200,000 or €16,400/ac.
The third lot consists of16.6ac and is made up of top grazing land with a mains water supply and guided at €250,000 or €15,000/ac. The entire 135ac farm will also be offered.
