Woodcarving demo at Nenagh Library
Renowned craftsman Para Havatitye visited Nenagh Library on Thursday last as part of their Bealtaine programme.
Joined by Michael O'Brien of the Silvermines Men's Shed, as well as members of Nenagh Men's Shed, they displayed several pieces in different woods that showcased the beauty of woodcarving, its intricacy and detail, giving rise to sculptures that were either delicate or robust, but always expressive of the men's work.
Then, taking out a block of wood, Para set up and got to work while an interested crowd gathered around to watch and discuss what he was doing. Without breaking concentration, he spoke easily about his background, how he got started on sculpting with wood and what his work entails nowadays.
He answered questions and invited members of the audience up to try their hand at carving. Members of the Men's Sheds also contributed, talking easily of their work and how they created their pieces. They made it seem so easy and rewarding that people did try their hand at this skilled craft, even members of library staff taking their turn.
We would like to thank Para and the members of the Silvermines and Nenagh Men's Sheds for taking the time to visit us as part of our Bealtaine programme.
