Revitalising the town

Meeting of Nenagh Town Team

Nenagh Town Team has recently reformed to develop a new Town Centre First Plan for the town. This promising initiative aims to further revitalise the town and making it more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

The team is made up of a diverse range of stakeholders representing the business, retail, sporting, community, voluntary, youth and education sector in the town. The Nenagh Town Team are akin to the local experts who have come together to make their area a better place to live, work, visit and invest, make a positive impact and deliver positive outcomes.

They will work in collaboration with Tipperary County Council and local representatives to support the delivery of a new Town Centre First Plan for Nenagh.

Over the coming months the team will work with the Town Regeneration Officer and the District Administrator in Nenagh to formulate a plan that will guide the regeneration of the town, build on the positive initiatives taking place, set a new vision for the town and identify projects and a set of actions for the team.

Last week at their first meeting held in the Nenagh Municipal District Chamber since pre-Covid, the team heard from the Town Regeneration Officer, Áine Mc Carthy, who explained that the Town Centre First policy was launched by the government in 2022 to create town centres that function as viable, vibrant and attractive locations for people to live, work and visit, while also functioning as the service, social, cultural and recreational hub for the local community.

As a result, Tipperary County Council is working with Town Teams around the county to create Town Centre First Plans for towns and villages and Nenagh is next on the list.

Rosemary Joyce, District Administrator with Nenagh Municipal District, was nominated by the team to become the new Town Champion.

Ms Joyce delivered a presentation to inspire the team into action and asked them to consider the future vision for the town and how a new Town Centre First Plan can capitalise on the work already under way in the district. She provided examples of such work which includes proposals in relation to the Rialto, the Nenagh Historic and Cultural Quarter, the Sustainable Energy Centre of Excellence on Martyr’s Road, improvements to the public realm infrastructure, active travel programmes, and tourism initiatives in relation to Nenagh Castle, Nenagh Gaol, and the excellent Tourist Office.

Ms Joyce commented: “This collaborative effort between local government and community stakeholders is essential for driving positive change and ensuring that the new plan reflects the needs and aspirations of the local community.

“It will be exciting to see the progress of the Town Centre First Plan for Nenagh and how it will contribute to the town's regeneration and development. Keeping the community informed and engaged through channels like the council website will be crucial for ensuring transparency and encouraging participation.”
