Mayfly season starts on Lough Derg

The Mayfly season has started on Lough Derg, with good hatches of the fly reported on the lake in the past week.

To celebrate the occasion and do some good for the community, Garrykennedy Fishing Club is staging a fly competition on the lake this Saturday, May 4, in aid of North Tipperary Hospice.

The ‘Charity Pairs’ event, organised by club member Shane Creamer, started a few years ago and received such a positive response that it has now become an annual competition.

The club is urging as many anglers as possible to come out and fish in the competition on this Saturday and support the hospice.

Anglers can fish with the partner of their choice and there will be prizes at the end of the day. All fish caught will be measured. If anglers wish, they can release any catches back into the lake as part of the club’s ongoing efforts to preserve trout stocks in the lake and its tributaries.

The competition starts in Garrykennedy at 10.30am and ends at 6pm sharp. Tea and coffee will be served afterwards in the club’s Clobber Shed in Garrykennedy.

Entry fee for Garrykennedy Fishing Club members is €10 and €20 for those who are not members.
