Appeal to dog owners

Dog owners are being asked to be particularly vigilant of their pets at this time of year.

At the April meeting of Nenagh Municipal District, Cllr Ger Darcy recalled the "horrific" attacks on sheep and lambs in the locality early last year. He noted that there have already been some kills this year, though thankfully on a much smaller scale.

Cllr Darcy said sheep and lambs are very vulnerable at this time of year and he asked the council to enhance its awareness campaign for dog owners. "Know where your dog is at all times," he implored.

Senior Executive Engineer Michael Moloney said the council would step up its efforts in this area, and would also be running an awareness campaign in relation to dog fouling. He noted that 639 dog licences were reported in the first quarter of the year, an 18.5% increase on the number of licences issued for the same period in 2023. Mr Moloney praised the council's dog wardens.
