Local club cleans up rubbish in Dromineer

Divers retrieved a huge variety of rubbish from beneath the water at Dromineer last Saturday as part of a cleanup organised by Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club.

Held in conjunction with Dromineer & District Development Association/Tidy Towns, this was the club's contribution to the National Spring Clean. It had been some years since our last cleanup at Dromineer, and last Saturday's operation saw another stockpile of assorted waste pulled from the water.

The rubbish included everything from glass bottles and receptacles to aluminium cans, boating equipment, fishing equipment, cooking utensils, traffic cones, rubber tyres, clothes, tarpaulin and even a car battery.

The divers used nets and ropes to gather and haul up everything to a support team on the shore. They were accompanied by snorkellers and we also had our boat in the water to advise other boat traffic about the operation.

At the end of the cleanup, our boat team came to the assistance of two other craft that got into difficulty when the wind picked up, leading to rough conditions outside the harbour.

We towed a speed boat back and its crew of two into Dromineer, and then went back out to the aid of a windsurfer, whose sail was damaged in the strong wind.

Another eventful day for Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club and one that has left the scenic amenity area of Dromineer in better condition ahead of the new tourism season.

Well done and thanks to everyone involved.
