PREMIER LEAGUE

Nenagh AFC 5-3 Newport Town

It was a vital three points for Nenagh who have closed the gap to just a point on Geraldines and Newport in the table.

The home side took the lead after 25 minutes when Lee Mowatt teed up Cillian Scully to tap home. On 40 minutes, John O’Meara forced the ball over the line following a goalmouth scramble to double the lead.

Newport looked like they would send the sides in at the break with a goal between them when Jay Ryan headed home to reduce the deficit. However, just before the half time whistle a surging run by Kieran Barr ended with Ryan Gilmartin turning his man before rolling the ball into the bottom corner.

The second half continued with Nenagh on the front foot, and they added a fourth goal when Cillian Scully left his marker for dead and squared the ball to Ryan Gilmartin to tap home his second of the day.

Nenagh may have felt the job was done but Newport bounced back with two goals inside five minutes, Darren Collins fired in from outside the box to make it 4-2 and when Peter O’Sullivan headed home, we were back to a one goal game.

The home side kept their nerve and with ten minutes remaining Kieran Barr headed in from Gilmartin’s delivery to seal the win.
