Council CEO to bow out

Joe MacGrath has announced that he will retire from the position of Chief Executive with Tipperary County Council following the expiry of his contract at the end of May 2024.

Mr MacGrath was appointed as the first Chief Executive of Tipperary County Council in 2014 following the merger of the former North and South Tipperary County Councils. He previously held the positions of dual County Manager for both councils from 2013 to 2014, County Manager, North Tipperary County Council from 2010 to 2013; City Manager, Galway City Council from 2005 to 2010, and also served in local authorities in Kerry, Limerick and Wicklow.

Mr MacGrath was Chairman of the County and City Management Association (CCMA) for the period 2016 to 2017 and is the current Chairman of the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA), having been a member of the CCMA Executive and the board of the LGMA on four separate occasions between 2012 and 2024.

He is also a director and board member of Tipperary Tourism. Mr MacGrath expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to the elected members and staff of Tipperary County Council for their support and commitment over the years.

He added: “lt has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to serve in a number of local authorities for almost 39 years but it has been a particular honour to hold the position of Chief Executive in my home county. I look forward to beginning a new chapter in my life, but in the meantime, there is much to be done in the weeks ahead before I retire.”
