Busy week at Newport College

A busy week of sport at Newport

Newport College had an extremely busy week of sport with a plethora of sporting activities for students to enjoy.

On Tuesday, our Senior and Junior Ultimate Frisbee teams travelled to Castletroy College for a full day of sport. Both games were highly competitive, fast-paced and exciting. Our Senior and Junior teams put in excellent performances however Castletroy College managed to come out on top. Our Junior Volleyball team also played a very competitive game against Castletroy College at the same venue. They put in an excellent exhibition of skill with the result ending in favour of Newport College.

On Wednesday, our U14 boys rugby team travelled to the University of Limerick to partake in the Munster Rugby blitz. They played four games within the blitz and put in an excellent team performance of rugby with great set plays as well as skilful attacking and defending. The boys came away with some great victories from some very tough encounters.

On Thursday, March 7, the U15 hurling team travelled to our neighbours and performed very well against a tough Glenstal Abbey side. Newport College came out victorious after the final whistle.

Certified Irish Angus Beef Competition

Congratulations to our Transition Year students Sam, Kyle and Cillian who made it to the Certified Irish Angus Schools Competition finalist exhibition in Croke Park. This competition challenges students to rear five Irish Angus calves while completing a research project over the course of 18 months. The competition’s main purpose is to promote the Certified Irish Angus brand while showing students the level of care and attention needed to produce quality beef for the consumer. The group presented their project about sustainability and consumer satisfaction in the Irish Angus breed of cattle to judges on Friday, March 1, and will hear the results in the coming weeks.

Women in Sport

Heartfelt congratulations to Nina Donnellan, one of our First Year students in Newport College, who placed first in the Tipperary County U15 Athletics 800m at the weekend. A wonderful achievement on the cusp of International Women’s Day and an inspiration to young girls getting involved in sport!

To round out the week, on International Women’s Day, all First Years as well as a team of Third Year girls took part in a rowing blitz in the University of Limerick. This came after a 6-week training programme provided by rowing coaches in PE classes.

DCG Class

Mr Bourke’s Fifth Year DCG class enjoying teaching and learning in the newest addition to Newport College. These new prefabs, opened during the week, adding four new classrooms, extra bathroom space as well as a brand new DCG/computer room to the school. After extensive work, these classrooms will make a great addition to the growing student population.
