Newport ease to derby Cup win

Limerick District League Review

By Pat Sheehan

After a month without a game, Newport Town got back to winning ways in the Lawson Cup when they defeated near neighbours Murroe with ease to move into round three of the competition.

It took a while for the Premier side to find their feet and they were held scoreless in a frustrating first half. However, after the restart it was a much better performance; Darren Collins breaking the deadlock when he headed in Luke Ryan’s delivery.

The same player doubled the home side’s lead with a well struck shot. Dead-ball specialist, Elliot Slattery proved his worth for Newport when he scored twice, both from free kicks. With time running out

Daniel Ryan got in on the act scoring a rebound when Brian O’Sullivan’s shot was blocked.

Moyross or Ballynanty Rovers will provide the opposition in round three.

Newport Town: Harry Ryan; Eoin Guilfoyle; Joe Shanahan; Christy O'Connor; Pa Murtagh; Darren Collins; Elliot Slattery; Conor Brett; Cillian O'Shea; Jay Ryan; Luke Ryan. Subs: Daniel Ryan; Brian O'Sullivan; Drew McLean; Killian O'Malley.
