Empowering Tipp’s retail sector

Industry leaders set out to provide information and strategies to the retailers of the Premier County in an evening of knowledge-sharing and inspiration at the Tipperary County Council ‘Retail Edge’ Symposium lon March 6. The event was aimed at supporting the retail sector by addressing some of the most challenging areas for businesses at this time. Renowned retail performance coach Alf Dunbar headlined the event with a Customer Service Master Class. His insights delved into the art of delivering exceptional service, fostering customer loyalty, and adapting to evolving consumer trends. All attendees to the event received a free copy of his book which is filled with great ideas for the challenges experienced by the retail sector.

Tommy Smyth, an expert in human resources, provided tailored information for the retail sector. His session covered employment law basics, talent retention strategies and ideas on how businesses can attract top talent. This session was particularly well received as the latest changes to the legal framework for employers was outlined and the retailers were able to get clarity on their responsibilities.

Áine O’Leary, the 2023 winner of the medium-sized online retailer of the year award, shared her inspiring journey to successful online selling. Attendees gained insights into growth opportunities in the online retail space as they heard how she addressed the many challenges to go from local to global with her clothes business.

Cllr Ger Darcy, Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council, stated that Tipperary County Council recognises the importance of the retail sector to the economic success of our county. He noted that the council is conscious of the need to support the sector and have explored numerous ways to provide same, within their remit. He noted specific targeted actions including the Painting and Enhancement Scheme, the Christmas Retail Grant Scheme, the Commercial Vacancy Incentive Scheme and the very popular ‘Shop Local Tipperary’ social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram.

Tipperary County Council CEO, Joe MacGrath, summed up the evening and he acknowledged the challenging issues faced by the retail sector in County Tipperary and further afield which he stated included changes in technology, changes in employment law, the popularity of online shopping, the new expectations of customers and the issue of both resourcing and retaining staff. However, he felt confident that the presentations had provided a range of ways to confront the challenges and provided great ideas for continued growth.
