Deputy Cahill: There's a need to increase road safety for pedestrians and road users alike.

Call for road safety measures in Borrisoleigh

Local TD Jackie Cahill is calling for road safety measures to be introduced in Borrisoleigh, on the busy stretch of the Thurles – Nenagh Road, R498.

Deputy Cahill is in contact with Tipperary County Council to seek clarification on how the council plans to tackle road safety and speeding issues in Borrisoleigh and implement a badly-needed traffic calming system in the town.

The Fianna Fáil TD said: “I have asked Tipperary County Council to outline to me the road safety and traffic calming measures it intends to introduce in Borrisoleigh.

“I have made a number of proposals to the council that I believe need to be undertaken to tackle speeding through the town and increase road safety for pedestrians and road users alike.

“Borrisoleigh is a very busy place, with both primary and post-primary schools located there. A huge amount of traffic passes through Borrisoleigh on a daily basis and action is needed by Tipperary County Council to ensure that road safety is drastically improved locally. As a main artery road in the north of the county, Borrisoleigh sees a great deal of heavy machinery and lorries passing through it on a daily basis.

“I have asked the council to install traffic calming measures on the approach to Borrisoleigh from both sides. I also believe that pedestrian crossings need to be installed around the Mount George Estate and at the other end of Borrisoleigh near the Garda Station or GAA field.

“The junction at the Templemore Road, R501 is very dangerous. I have asked the council to look at the layout of this junction and how it intends to make this much safer.

“It is great to see road safety works commencing in The Ragg and to see works finally commencing on the Latteragh realignment. However, the issues affecting these two areas are very similar to those affecting Borrisoleigh. The same traffic is passing through Borrisoleigh as it is The Ragg and Latteragh, and Borrisoleigh, being a built up area, desperately needs action to tackle road safety and speeding.”
