Lynn (centre) teaching Raedan Richardson from Australia and Andrea Bolger from Templemore how to make the St Brigid’s cross at Killea Community Hall after Mass on Sunday last.

St Brigid's Day talk and demonstration

Local artist Lynn Kirkham (Killea) has always had a commitment to upholding traditional crafts and customs.

For many years, this has included the annual harvesting and weaving of rushes into crosses for St Brigid's Day, February 1. Over time, Lynn has researched and learned to make over 20 different regional versions of the cross, using rushes, willow and straw.

She can also tell many stories about the saint's life, and the mythology and folklore surrounding her. Each year Lynn holds events to celebrate St Brigid's Day, where she teaches the basic and more advanced cross-making skills to anyone who wants to have a go. You can even try your hand at making a woven Brideóg doll to bring home too.

Now that St Brigid has gained full recognition as an important historical Irish figure, there has never been a better time to learn more about her and make a beautiful cross of your own. Lynn will attend a workshop at Nenagh Arts Centre on Thursday, February 1, 3.30pm to 7pm, drop-in workshop.

Lynn will also give a lecture to the Sr Áine Historical Society in Templemore on Friday, February 2, at 7pm. The talk will be held in the McAuley Centre and Lynn will also afford those in attendance to have a go at making their own. Entry on the night is €10. Refreshments served. All are welcome.
