‘Room to Improve’ for local contractor
Award-winning Tipperary-based retrofit contractor SOLA has once again wowed the nation with their exceptional skills and ability to deliver outstanding results.
In July 2023 SOLA embarked on an ambitious renovation project that aired last weekend on the renowned TV series ‘Room to Improve’, hosted by Dermot Bannon, the third collaboration between the two. Nestled under the foot of the iconic Rock of Cashel, Brian, Kate and their young family, with the guidance and vision of architect Dermot Bannon were determined to make their home come to life and not to be deterred by the challenges of the project.
Purchased two years previously, the 1970s bungalow required huge renovations, presenting a significant challenge due to its prolonged vacancy and outdated structure. Initially assessed with a BER rating of E1, the house was cold with an extension that did not meet building regulations, which had to be removed. The roof of the dwelling was condemned on further inspection and had to be completely replaced. It was clear that a major transformation was needed to revitalise the space into a modern, energy-efficient home for the family.
Their dreams of a large extension and outdoor space were curbed due to rising and unforeseen costs during renovations. The inclusion of a fourth bedroom, the size of the extension and the outdoor landscaping were compromises Kate and Brian had to make.
SOLA began demolition works in mid July with an extremely tight timeline, which was hampered by the unpredictable summer weather. The blockwork of the extension and the construction of the new roof were completed by late August, before the commencement of the internal upgrade. As an SEAI approved contractor, SOLA began work on this transformation with a series of strategic upgrades aimed at drastically improving the property’s energy efficiency and maximising the space available to an A-rated Home.
Brian and Kate applied for the grants currently available through the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant and the SEAI Energy Upgrade Grants. These funds were instrumental and crucial to the project’s feasibility.
As one of the main retrofit contractors in Ireland, Paul from SOLA was keen to point out: “The introduction of these grants is proving pivotal in residential property renovations for homeowners nationwide.”
With the December deadline fast approaching, SOLA pulled out all the stops to make their dream a reality. Paul, the SOLA team of employees and the subcontractors worked tirelessly to meet the ever-looming deadline.
As 2023 drew to a close Brian, Kate and family got to celebrate Christmas in their dream home surrounded by family and friends. At the end of last Sunday night’s televised show, Dermot toasted all the endeavours and challenges that they had overcome and wished Brian and Kate a lifetime of happiness.
