County Chairperson apologises over Convention voting mistakes

By Shane Brophy

New Tipperary County Board chairperson Jimmy Minogue admitted the county lost a lot of credibility over the manner of the voided vice-chairpersons election at County Convention earlier this month.

The Nenagh Eire Og clubman made his comments at the December county board meeting held online last Tuesday, three days after convention, where too many votes were cast in the election between Roscrea’s Mark McLoughlin and Borris-Ileigh’s Michael Tierney.

In apologising to both men for the way the vote was handled, Minogue said: “It was not a night we did ourselves proud. We lost a lot of credibility on Saturday night with the way things happened. We will learn from it and look to put things in place that it doesn't happen again."

Tipperary County Board sought advice from Croke Park as to how best to handle the re-vote, and it has been confirmed that it will once again take place in-person on Tuesday, January 23rd 2024 in the Dome, FBD Semple Stadium, where delegates who are eligible to vote will be asked to attend between 6.30 & 7.45pm.

The voting process will be overseen by Tipperary GAA CEO Murtagh Brennan with the assistance of, members of Tipperary County Council, Tipperary GAA County Executive and Divisional Board Secretaries.

Following the vote, a County Committee meeting will take place where the result of the ballot will be announced.

Full details will be circulated to each club in due course.

It was also revealed that without a current vice-chairperson, who is also the chairperson of the CCCC, county treasurer Eleanor Lahart will be acting chairperson of that committee, who are in charge of fixtures.

The county board meeting also ratified Cappawhite’s Eoin Doody as the new children’s officer, succeeding the long serving Nicholas Moroney, who has vacated the role after becoming South Board chairperson.
