Celebrate Heritage Week in Nenagh

Events planned from August 12 to 20

The theme for Heritage Week 2023 is ‘Living Heritage’. Within the Nenagh Historic & Cultural Quarter our Heritage is being brought to life and being celebrated with a wonderful programme of events.

The programme has something for everyone – from those who want to indulge in nostalgia and take a step back in time, to those who are interested in finding out more about the past and the customs and traditions of yesteryear.

Working collaboratively, doors are being opened to give an opportunity to explore, learn and enjoy the heritage assets on our own doorstep.

The Courts Service has facilitated a tour of Nenagh Courthouse – this tour is now fully booked up and has proven to be one of the most popular events of the week.

A tour of the gatehouse at the Governor’s House will be a unique interactive opportunity to meet some of the prisoners and find out their fate. The Nenagh 800 tour will be a chance to explore the Historic & Cultural Quarter and, in addition to hearing the stories of the various elements, you will have the opportunity to find out the future plans for the area.

Nenagh is a town with a story to tell and Heritage Week gives the chance to hear those stories, including the Myths and Legends as recounted by Victoria from Nenagh Tourist Office and poetry for young children with Anne Hogan. Nora O’Meara, genealogist, will explain how to trace your North Tipperary ancestors.

Peter Ward, who is well-known for his keen interest in food, will give a talk at Nenagh Heritage Centre and there will be a display of traditional brown bread making and the craft of butter-making. A display of some of the artefacts of Nenagh Heritage Centre can be viewed in the Castle Field where the traditional crafts of the blacksmith and the wood-turner will also be on view.

Take to the dancefloor for Dancing at the Crossroads and learn how to set dance in Banba Square, in front of the Tourist Office or just stop by and enjoy the traditional Irish music.

Nenagh Arts Centre will play its part with the Up Cycled Streetscape Exhibition; the Photography Walk & Talk with Kevin Lim; ‘Stitching Up’ – a multigenerational stitch gathering for those who enjoy knitting, stitching or embroidery; a workshop for children on how to make your own wallpaper with stamps and ink and another workshop on using native wildflowers for homemade paper.

The Nenagh Players provide lunchtime theatre in their premises, ‘The Store’ at Hanley’s Place with some of their favourite sketches.

So food, laughter, stories and dance – it’s all there.
